Witness the sights\, sounds and smells of local community life\, and learn how a Great Western Railway worker would have lived with their family living in Swindon c1901. \nWhat are the details?\nThis approximately 30 minute tour will be hosted from 3pm by a knowledgeable volunteer who will guide you through each room of the Railway Cottage. \nVisiting the Railway Village Museum is free of charge. However\, as we rely heavily on donations and the generous support of our volunteers to remain open\, any contribution is greatly appreciated. \nWe are running a series of Tours throughout the season so if you can’t make this one\, view our other events here. \nRailway Village Guided Heritage Walk\nIf you’d like to extend your visit\, you can choose to follow your museum tour with a guided heritage walk of the Railway Village. Explore the architectural and social history of GWR Park\, the Carriage Works\, the Water Tower\, the Health Hydro and more! \nThe route is mostly flat and you will be guided by one of our dedicated volunteers. \nImportant Information\n\nBooking is essential. Both the Museum tour and Guided Heritage Walk will only go ahead if there are bookings.\nThe Railway Village Guided Heritage Walk may occasionally be cancelled due to weather conditions or staff/volunteer availability.\nNo food or drink is allowed inside the Museum.\nThere are no toilet facilities at the Museum\, but there are toilets available at the nearby supporting site: The Bakers’.\n\nAccessibility\nWheelchair ramps are available for the Museum\, with the ground floor accessible for wheelchairs. DESCRIPTION:Signal Festival 2025 is an external event that runs 25th July to 2nd August aimed at Swindon’s young people 11 to 25. \nCreate\nSignal aims to build creativity in Swindon and give young people the necessary skills and resources. We want young artists and enthusiasts to feel like they can succeed artistically in their hometown and flourish creatively. Our programme is delivered by a wide range of professional artists\, giving you a chance to try new art forms\, discover your talents and develop your existing skills. Beginners and experienced all welcome! \nInspire\nWe firmly believe that any young person interested in art is just as capable of artistic achievement as anybody else. The exhibitions and showcases included in our program are made with the aim to inspire budding artists and individuals who want to pursue art as a future career. Careers events are purposely included to guide young people in the right direction towards their job goals in the arts industries. DESCRIPTION:GWR’s Railway Village\, “New Swindon”\, was barely half-built and the Works still modest in extent when land was earmarked for a “park” in 1844.  \nWhat does this tell us about the Company\, its workers and their families\, and prevailing Victorian values? And what were typical Victorian and Edwardian sporting and leisure activities anyway? \nMary Thornton has been a Swindon Heritage Preservation volunteer for many years and can’t help digging into the Railway Village’s past. \nCost\nSwindon Heritage Preservation (SHP) Full Members – FREE Entry \nGuests – £5.00 Entry \nMembership\nBecoming a SHP Full Member gives you full FREE access to our series of talks for Railway 200\, along with many other benefits. DESCRIPTION:This external event is organised by Artsite People Places Partnership. \nSwindon Arts Fringe Festival\nSwindon Arts Fringe Festival (SWAF) returns to Swindon Town Centre for a second year and hopes to be even more successful as last year. The Fringe Festival focuses on inclusivity for curators and artists: giving opportunities for artists to find their place in Swindon’s vibrant creative scene and supporting them to freely exhibit\, some for the first time. SWAF24 saw over 95 artists involved in the festival and drew over 1\,000 visitors to the exhibitions. The Fringe is a truly collaborative event created by Theatre Square-based Artsite. As well as exhibitions there will be events and workshops to bring the arts to a wider audience. ‘As Time Goes by’ exhibition at Artsite will feature a performance by Rinky Dink. The bicycle powered sound system\, and a talk by artist Stephen Wright from The House of Dreams Museum will complement the ‘Outsider Art’ exhibition by SLART in Museum & Art Swindon. \nSWAF24’s collaboration with the Carriage Works was a huge success and the use of the building as an exhibition space prompted a lot of positive discussions and reactions. One visitor commented “Fantastic use of Armstrong’s Carriage works. A wide range of works from Swindon’s diverse and talented artistic pool. All showcased in an awesome venue. Well done to Artsite and everyone involved.” \nSWAF 2025\nThis year\, 14 curators have come up with a variety of creative themes and have invited artists to submit work. ‘Miniature Swindon’ curated by Leah Bevan-Haines asked artists to create tiny items that represent things\, places and people in Swindon. ‘Broken Britannia’ exhibition curator\, invited artists to express their unique perspectives – good or bad – on life in Britain 2025. \nVenues this year include the Wyvern Theatre\, Artsite in Theatre Square\, Swindon Central Library\, Mams Gallery\, Museum & Art Swindon\, Bert’s Books\, Swindon Hub and the Carriage Works. DESCRIPTION:Join our Volunteer Community!\n\n\n\n\nHelp Preserve Swindon’s Heritage!\nAre you passionate about history\, community and making a difference? \nSwindon Heritage Preservation is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support our work\, from caring and sharing historical sites to supporting engaging community events for the public. Whether you can spare just a few hours or want to get involved regularly\, there’s a place for you in our volunteer team! \nSince 1995\, Swindon Heritage Preservation (formerly The Mechanics’ Institution Trust) has been working to conserve the precious stories and places that tell Swindon’s story. We are Swindon’s only building preservation trust\, combining social impact and community benefit with building restoration\, conservation and history. \nWe look after a number of heritage buildings located in Swindon’s historic Railway Village. These include: The Central Community Centre\, The Railway Village Museum\, The Bakers’ and The Cricketers’.
